A shocking incident occurred in Cox’s Bazar when an attack on a Bangladesh Air Force base resulted in the death of one individual and injuries to several others. The violent confrontation unfolded when a dispute involving a local resident escalated into a full-scale altercation, leading to tragic consequences.
The sequence of events began when military personnel stopped a motorcyclist, later identified as Shihab Kabir, for not wearing a helmet. Kabir was brought into the base for questioning, but what followed was far from a routine check. Hundreds of angry local residents, many from the nearby Samitipara community, gathered near the military base in protest. The group, which reportedly included men, women, and children, began hurling stones at the soldiers, who tried to calm the situation.
Faced with the escalating violence, the air force personnel fired warning shots into the air. Despite this, the situation quickly deteriorated into a violent clash. In the confusion, Kabir was reportedly shot and later died from his injuries. Several other individuals, both civilians and military members, were injured in the exchange.
The Bangladesh military swiftly issued a statement blaming the attack on “violent miscreants” and asserting that they were acting in self-defense. The ISPR added that the soldiers at the base were merely carrying out their duties and had no intention of escalating the situation. While the military promised a full investigation, local authorities expressed concerns about the potential for further unrest in the region.
