In light of the United States’ consideration of higher tariffs on Indian goods, Nirmala Sitharaman, the Finance Minister of India, highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring that Indian exporters are shielded from any adverse impacts. The possibility of increased tariffs on a range of products, especially steel and textiles, has raised concerns in India’s export sectors.

Sitharaman emphasized the importance of safeguarding industries that are particularly vulnerable to international trade barriers. The Finance Ministry is reportedly exploring several protective measures, including strengthening trade relations with other countries and negotiating bilateral trade agreements to reduce dependency on US markets. India may also seek to challenge any unjustified tariffs through WTO channels.

The government is working to provide exporters with more resources, including financial support and access to new markets, to mitigate the risks posed by tariff hikes. Sitharaman reassured that India’s economic policies would adapt to the evolving global trade environment.
