Tamil Nadu BJP Leaders Arrested for Protesting Against Tasmac Liquor Stores

News (37)

Tensions in Tamil Nadu reached new heights today as BJP leaders, including state president K. Annamalai and Tamilisai Soundararajan, were arrested by the police during a protest at the Tasmac headquarters. The BJP leaders had gathered to voice their opposition to the state’s controversial liquor policy, which involves the operation of Tasmac—an extensive network of government-run liquor outlets.

The protest was organized by the BJP as part of its ongoing campaign to raise awareness about the adverse effects of alcohol consumption in Tamil Nadu. Tasmac, which is the largest retailer of alcoholic beverages in the state, has been under constant criticism for contributing to rising rates of alcoholism, social problems, and family breakdowns.

In the lead-up to the protest, Annamalai issued a statement condemning the state’s dependence on liquor sales for its revenue, claiming that the government is turning a blind eye to the negative social consequences. He also pointed out that many families in the state are suffering due to the ease of access to alcohol, which he claimed has been exacerbated by the DMK government’s policies.

Tamilisai Soundararajan, who had previously been involved in various social welfare initiatives during her tenure as governor, echoed Annamalai’s sentiments, calling for a comprehensive review of the state’s alcohol distribution system. She argued that the government needs to prioritize public health and family welfare over short-term revenue generation.

Despite the arrests, BJP workers have vowed to continue their campaign and demand that the DMK government take steps to curb the growing alcohol addiction issue. The protest and subsequent arrests are expected to fuel further political debate over the issue, with the DMK likely to counter the BJP’s accusations by defending the state’s liquor policy as necessary for economic development.
