A case of alleged sexual assault involving a 17-year-old girl has been reported from Astha Kunj Park near Kalkaji Mandir in southeast Delhi. Police said three men allegedly posed as police officers before threatening the teenager and her male friend and sexually assaulting the girl.
The incident reportedly occurred on Monday evening. According to information released by Delhi Police, the girl had travelled to Kalkaji Mandir with a 17-year-old male friend. They reached the temple at around 7 pm and later went to Astha Kunj Park.
The teenagers reportedly entered the park at approximately 7:30 pm. While they were there, three men allegedly approached them. Police said the men were between 25 and 30 years old and claimed to be police personnel.
The suspects allegedly threatened the teenagers. According to the girl’s statement, one of the men held her friend while the three allegedly sexually assaulted her.
The incident was reported to police through a PCR call at approximately 8:45 pm. A police team from Amar Colony police station subsequently reached the park. Officers found the girl and her friend and began the investigation.
Police treated the matter as a serious case involving a minor and initiated procedures under the POCSO Act. The girl’s medical examination was conducted, while investigators recorded her statement. The crime scene was also examined by forensic personnel, according to police information.
The investigation soon expanded beyond the park. Multiple police teams were constituted to trace the three suspects. CCTV footage from areas surrounding Astha Kunj Park and routes connected to the location was examined to identify the men and reconstruct their movements.
During the investigation, police received information about the movement of one suspect identified as Asif. A team led by personnel from the Special Staff reportedly located him near DM Office Road in Amar Colony.
Police said that when officers attempted to apprehend him, he allegedly fired at the police team. According to the police version, three rounds were fired by the suspect. One bullet reportedly hit the bulletproof jacket of Head Constable Rajesh.
The officer subsequently fired two rounds in self-defence, police said. One of those rounds struck Asif in his right leg. He was then apprehended and taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre for medical treatment.
Investigators also called crime and forensic teams to the encounter location to collect evidence and document the scene.
While one suspect has been apprehended, police continued efforts to locate the other two alleged participants. Authorities are examining available evidence, including CCTV footage and forensic material, as the investigation progresses.
The case has also raised concerns about the impersonation of police personnel. Claiming to be a police officer can create fear and make victims more vulnerable to coercion. In this case, police allege that the suspects used such a claim to threaten the two teenagers.
The investigation is continuing, and the allegations will ultimately be tested through the legal process.
