The political climate in West Bengal has heated up as the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leveled serious accusations against the Election Commission (EC) regarding the integrity of the recent 2024 elections. The TMC has raised the alarm over what it is calling a “massive election scam” that allegedly manipulated voting patterns to the benefit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In a series of press statements and public speeches, TMC leaders claimed that the Election Commission, which is supposed to uphold fairness, had been complicit in allowing systematic electoral fraud.
TMC’s accusations focus primarily on what they describe as a pattern of voter disenfranchisement, where large sections of voters were either removed from the rolls or prevented from voting altogether. They specifically pointed to areas with high TMC support, where incidents of voters being denied their right to vote were most pronounced. In some cases, TMC workers claim that voters who had already cast their votes were informed that their ballots had been incorrectly recorded or altered, raising concerns about the reliability of the electoral process.
The TMC has also raised alarms about the alleged tampering with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), suggesting that the machines may have been programmed to favor certain candidates. They argue that multiple constituencies witnessed abnormal results, with large margins of victory in areas that had previously been considered strongholds for the TMC. The party has called for a forensic investigation into the functioning of the EVMs used in these constituencies.
The party’s leaders have further accused the Election Commission of not taking appropriate action to prevent these issues. According to TMC spokespersons, the Commission’s failure to act swiftly and decisively suggests that there was collusion at play, possibly to ensure the victory of the BJP. These serious charges have sparked widespread outrage among TMC supporters, who are demanding accountability and transparency.
In defense, the Election Commission has categorically denied any wrongdoing, asserting that they adhered to all prescribed procedures during the election. The Commission dismissed allegations of EVM tampering as “unsubstantiated” and pointed out that all parties had been given equal opportunities to monitor the election process.
While the Election Commission maintains that the elections were conducted fairly, the TMC’s allegations have sparked protests across the state. Many of the TMC’s supporters believe that their party was robbed of its rightful victory through a combination of voter manipulation and fraud, a sentiment that has only grown stronger with the party’s continued demands for an investigation.
