In the aftermath of the devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has called for a special session of Parliament to discuss the deteriorating security situation in the region.

The attack, which occurred on April 22, 2025, in the Baisaran Valley—a popular tourist destination—was carried out by five militants armed with M4 carbines and AK-47s. Reports indicate that the attackers segregated victims based on religion before opening fire, leading to widespread condemnation across the nation.

Kharge expressed deep concern over the resurgence of terrorism in the region, questioning the government’s claims of peace and normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive discussion in Parliament to formulate a unified national response.

The Congress leader also criticized the government’s handling of the situation, pointing out that despite previous assurances, such attacks continue to occur. He called for a thorough investigation into the incident and accountability for those responsible.

In response, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice. The Cabinet Committee on Security convened a meeting to assess the situation and discuss measures to prevent future incidents.

The international community has also expressed solidarity with India, with leaders from various countries condemning the attack and offering condolences.
