Captain Smit Machchhar has emerged as the central figure in a dramatic aviation emergency after reportedly fighting to protect passengers aboard a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
The Indian captain was seriously injured during a confrontation with his co-pilot, according to reports. Despite his injuries, Machchhar helped create an opportunity for passengers and crew members to enter the cockpit and intervene.
The incident involved Flydubai Flight FZ1073. The Boeing 737 aircraft was carrying 174 people, including 27 children, when the emergency unfolded.
According to accounts reported by multiple news organisations, the aircraft suddenly entered a steep descent while the confrontation was taking place inside the flight deck. The plane reportedly lost thousands of feet before control of the situation was restored.
Machchhar was allegedly attacked inside the cockpit and sustained serious injuries. However, despite being wounded, he reportedly managed to unlock the cockpit door. That decision proved crucial because it allowed people outside the cockpit to enter and assist.
Passengers and crew members subsequently restrained the alleged attacker. Other pilots who were travelling on the aircraft also reportedly helped stabilise the situation.
The flight was then diverted to Saudi Arabia and landed safely in Tabuk.
The captain was taken for emergency treatment after landing. India’s Ministry of External Affairs said Machchhar was initially treated in Tabuk before being shifted to Abu Dhabi for continued medical attention and recovery. An Indian ambassador visited him in hospital and spoke with him and his family.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly recognised the captain’s actions. In a post on X, Modi called Machchhar a hero and said his courage and determination had helped save hundreds of lives and avert a major tragedy.
While addressing the UPSC centenary celebrations, Modi referred to the incident as an example of exceptional courage. He said Machchhar’s actions prevented another “9/11-like” attack. The comparison was also echoed in international commentary surrounding the incident.
The wording has drawn attention because the 2001 September 11 attacks involved the hijacking of commercial aircraft and deliberate crashes in the United States. In the Flydubai case, authorities are investigating the circumstances of the cockpit confrontation and the alleged attempt to take control of the aircraft.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also praised Machchhar and the passengers who intervened.
The captain’s professional background has added another dimension to the story. Reports indicate that Machchhar began his commercial aviation career with SpiceJet in 2011. During his time with the airline, he reportedly served as a senior commander and Line Training Captain. He joined Flydubai in June 2022 as a direct-entry captain.
The incident has generated widespread appreciation across India and abroad.
However, officials and the airline are expected to continue investigating the sequence of events before all details are conclusively established.
For the moment, Machchhar remains under medical care, while passengers who survived the terrifying episode have returned safely to the ground.
