Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Bangkok, Thailand, to participate in the much-anticipated BIMSTEC summit, where he will meet with fellow leaders from Southeast Asia and South Asia. The summit is a platform for discussions on economic cooperation, regional connectivity, security, and other issues that impact the Bay of Bengal region.
The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) was founded in 1997 to enhance collaboration among member countries, including India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Bhutan, and Nepal. As one of the founding members, India has been a vocal advocate for stronger economic integration and regional security.
The summit’s key agenda will focus on boosting trade and investment, improving infrastructure, and facilitating people-to-people connections among the seven countries. Prime Minister Modi’s participation is seen as a reaffirmation of India’s commitment to building stronger regional alliances.
In his address, PM Modi is expected to highlight India’s initiatives aimed at enhancing connectivity across the region, including the development of transport infrastructure, energy partnerships, and digital connectivity. The Prime Minister is also expected to speak about India’s role in addressing climate change, maritime security, and the importance of multilateral cooperation to foster peace and prosperity.
The BIMSTEC region, with a combined population of over 1.5 billion people, is one of the most dynamic and strategically important areas in Asia. As the summit takes place amidst growing global uncertainties, strengthening regional ties will be crucial to ensure economic growth and political stability.
