Essar Group’s planned Iowa steel complex is emerging as one of the most significant proposed industrial investments in the United States, with President Donald Trump announcing a $15 billion steel plant that is expected to eventually produce around 10 million tons of steel annually.

The project will be developed by Mesabi Metallics, a Minnesota-based company owned by India’s Essar Group. Trump announced the project at the White House on September 28, describing the facility as the largest steel plant in US history once fully built.

The proposed plant is expected to generate thousands of employment opportunities. The White House estimates that construction could support up to 6,000 jobs, while approximately 1,750 permanent positions are expected once the facility becomes operational. The associated mining operation in Minnesota will create additional employment.

The economic impact could extend beyond direct employment. According to the White House, the project is projected to add approximately $95 billion to the US economy during its first decade. Such a large industrial project could also generate demand for contractors, transportation companies, equipment suppliers and other businesses involved in construction and manufacturing.

The Iowa facility is planned as part of a vertically integrated American steel supply chain. Iron ore will come from Mesabi Metallics’ mining operation in Minnesota and then be used to manufacture steel at the Iowa plant.

The Minnesota operation itself represents a major investment. Mesabi Metallics has been developing a $2.5 billion iron ore mine and pellet plant designed to produce material suitable for steelmaking. The company said in March that more than 750 construction workers were already working on the Minnesota project as it moved toward commercial operations.

The Iowa steel plant is expected to begin production in 2030. Its initial production capacity is planned at approximately 7.5 million tons annually, with a longer-term target of about 10 million tons.

The scale of the proposed facility is significant because the United States has not seen many new mega-scale steelmaking projects in recent decades. ABC News reported that the Iowa project was described by a White House official as the first mega-steel plant built in the United States since the 1960s.

Trump has linked the project to his broader strategy of increasing American steel production. His administration has imposed a 50% tariff on steel imports, arguing that stronger trade protections can encourage domestic production. Supporters of the policy point to investments such as the Essar-backed project as evidence of companies increasing their US manufacturing presence, while economists and industry observers continue to debate the wider effects of tariffs on prices and competition.

For Essar, the project represents a long-term commitment to the American market. The company has already spent billions developing its Minnesota assets, and the Iowa plant would provide the next major link in its planned integrated steel business.

The development is therefore more than simply a new factory. It is intended to connect mining, raw-material processing and steel manufacturing across two US states.

If construction proceeds according to the current schedule, the first steel could emerge from the Iowa facility around 2030, marking a major new chapter in Essar’s American operations and adding substantial production capacity to the US steel industry.
