Twinkle Khanna aka Mrs Funnybones is known for speaking her mind and not mincing her words while doing so. The actress-turned-author, in her recent column, weighed in on Zomato’s ‘pure veg food’ row. For those who don’t know, the restaurant aggregator recently announced their plan to launch a separate ‘pure veg’ delivery fleet with green uniforms. Twinkle Khanna on Zomato ‘pure veg food’ row
In her new column for The Times of India, Twinkle Khanna wrote, “The folks at Zomato, they did what successful entrepreneurs are meant to do — see an unfulfilled need, service it and make a profit. It’s another matter that segregating food into pure and impure, and having a fleet of delivery persons that they proposed to dress in green made a large section of Indians see red.”
She further added, “On the surface, it seemed like a solution crafted for people with specific dietary requirements, but underneath that layer, they forgot that ‘pure veg’, unlike vegetarian or vegan, has connotations of caste, hierarchy, and untouchability. Communication is a serrated tool; it can be a healing scalpel or a dagger depending on how you use it, and that still doesn’t take into account how good your aim is.”
About Zomato’s ‘pure veg food’ controversy
Recently, Zomato attempted to introduce a dedicated fleet for delivering vegetarian food. This move – which saw the delivery agents dressed in green jerseys instead of the usual red shirts, faced significant backlash, with many calling it casteism. After severe backlash, the food delivery company hastily scrapped the colour-coding plan to prevent potential harassment of its delivery personnel who wear red.
